Music lesson plan: Bluey theme!

Why you should listen to the Bluey theme with your kids

The Bluey theme song isn’t just catchy—it’s a rhythm masterclass!

Joff Bush, Bluey’s composer, created a vibrant and playful piece that mirrors the energy of being a kid.

What’s extra special is how the time signature shifts—keeping kids on their toes.

Plus, kids love engaging with music they know through TV and this music lends itself to movement and keep a steady beat. In this article, we'll cover:

  • Time signatures (they change)
  • Instrument spotlight

Let's dig in!

Analysis of Joff Bush's Bluey theme

👉Changing time signatures

While most songs stick to 4/4 time, Bluey shifts through 7/8, 5/4, and 4/4.

The 7/8 section feels “lacking” half a beat, while 5/4 adds an extra whole beat, making the rhythm delightfully unpredictable.

This gives the music its energetic, slightly unsettling charm.

That being said, since the musical breaks are always the same length, it's surprisingly easy to keep with the rhythm. Find out how in my 3-minute video:

👉Instruments

What are the two primary instruments heard in the Bluey theme?

  • Baritone saxophone
  • Harmonica

As well as these core instruments, claps and various sound effects add texture.

Quick Fact: The harmonica is nearly 200 years old! It became a favourite because it’s small, portable, and easy to play—a pocket-sized orchestra perfect for blues, folk, and even cartoons.

Here's a picture of Bob Dylan using a harmonica holder whilst playing guitar and singing:

And here is Darth Vader doing a similar thing (or is he...?) 😄

If you enjoyed our brief look at the Bluey theme, next time you watch a Bluey episode, why not pay extra attention to the music? Aside from the theme, Joff Bush does clever things to match the music with the episode's theme.
